Never Let Being Liked Get in the Way of Being Respected
Donât compromise your principles or your integrity just to fit in or be liked. Donât succumb to peer pressure or waver on what you stand for. Being respected is far more valuable than being liked. Not everyone is going to like you. Thatâs just the reality.
If you stand for something meaningful, you will gain respect. And that respect will take you far. First off, find something to stand for. Once you know what you stand for, embrace it. Draw strength from it. Youâve got to be confident in yourself. Youâve got to be confident enough in yourself so that you can stand alone. Youâve got to be a leader, not a follower.
Humans are social animals. We want to be liked, loved, and embraced. Thatâs just human nature. But if you are too focused on being liked, you start to make decisions that donât reflect who you are. You start trying to please people. Once you start trying to please people, you lose sight of who you are and where youâre going.
Find good people to be around. You canât hang around the wrong crowd. Youâve got to associate with the right person, marry the right person, be in business with the right person. Find people you respect and who respect you. Find people who share your values. I know my values, and I know what I respect.
I respect dedication. I like it when I can see somebodyâs greatness and they donât have to tell me about it. That earns my respect. I know it took a lot of time for that person to climb that ladder. If they went so hard that theyâre visible to the public and I can watch it from afar, Iâm not a hater. I admire that. It earns my respect when somebody just grabs ahold of something and keeps on growing.
I respect the distance theyâve gone. The first time I meet somebody, I donât look at how much money theyâve amassed or how much success theyâve enjoyed. I prefer to take a longer view. After ten years, you can look at that person and youâre like, âMan. Theyâre making smart moves. I like the way he carries himself. They matured. He or she evolved.â Or, âDamn. I used to be like that person. Now they seem like theyâre in a bad place, that they went down. They fell off.â I look at the evolution of the business and the person. I look at the person who went from working at one McDonaldâs to managing it to starting their own restaurant. I like the person who got their degree and did something with it.
These are ideas, thoughts, and things that you can actually use so that you can keep moving up. If youâre a plumber, you can keep being a plumber to the point where you have a plumbing service. If youâre doing hair, you might want to open a salon. If one day you have your
